A note concerning the San Diego wildfires:
I hope that you have been able to stay out of harm's way during the devastating fires of this week which continue to burn and displace San Diego County residents. I realize that many of you have had to evacuate this week, or worse have lost a home. Despite the uncertainty of this week and upcoming weekend, the Bach Collegium San Diego will proceed forth with their concert plans for this Sunday as listed below.
Sometimes normalcy is the best thing. Perhaps we can all be reminded that there is beauty to be found amidst all of this madness, and that there are emotions expressed in the music of 17th and 18th centuries that can still touch us today. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.

Dietrich Buxtehude, the tercentenary of whose death we now celebrate this year, is regarded as one of the 17th century’s greatest organists and most influential musicians. In 1705, a twenty-year old Bach famously walked some 200 miles from Arnstadt to Lübeck to hear the great Buxtehude play-a visit that would leave an indelible mark on the young musician.

The notebooks of 1722 & 1725 contain a varied selection of suites, dances, arias, and chorales, which allow us for a moment to imagine the day-to-day music making in the Bach family.

The three cantatas demonstrate the youthful Bach exploring the prevalent music styles of his day-with one foot in the past, and one foot moving forward. While the three cantatas display masterful technique, some of the familiar fingerprints that make the composer’s mature style so instantly recognizable are yet to come.
