BYRD IS THE WYRD

A tribute to William Byrd (c.1540-1623), marking the quadricentennial of his death. Though among the most celebrated and influential composers of his day, in one way Byrd was an outsider to the mainstream: he was a Catholic in the wake of the rupture of the Church of England from Rome. BYRD IS THE WYRD features some of Byrd’s most important contributions to both the Anglican and Catholic liturgical music repertories, including the Mass for Four Voices, and the Magnificat from the Great Service.

Mass for Four Voices
Retire my Soul
O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth
Ye Sacred Muses
Sing Joyfully

FIRE AND FERVOR

Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) is one of the lesser-known musical figures of the 18th-century; yet his copious and esteemed output, and ability to blend styles, place him in the elite company of his friends and colleagues Telemann, Handel, and J.S. Bach. FIRE AND FERVOR exposes the connections between works by Fasch’s teacher in Darmstadt, Christoph Graupner; his famous contemporary Antonio Vivaldi, whose concertos he collected and used as models; and, the program’s centerpiece, Fasch’s own unique and inspired Lute Concerto.

Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto for Strings in G minor RV 156
Christoph Graupner: “Le Desire” from Overture in F major GWV 445
Johann Friedrich Fasch: Lute Concerto in D minor FaWV L:d1

VIENNESE RIVALS

When Mozart arrived in Vienna in 1781, at the apex of the imperial musical establishment was Kapellmeister Antonio Salieri; as Mozart wrote to his father in that year, “the only one who counts in [the Emperor’s] eyes is Salieri”. Since then, Salieri’s reputation has become associated with talentless mediocrity and even a murderous inferiority complex, most recently via Peter Schaffer’s play Amadeus (and the Oscar-winning film of the same name). VIENNESE RIVALS displays operatic arias and instrumental music by Mozart and Salieri side by side, giving our listeners a rare opportunity to judge the merits of both composers for themselves!

W.A. Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtsmusik, K. 525 (1787) 4. Finale: Allegro Mozart: Aria: “Vedrai carino” from Don Giovanni, K. 527 (1787) Jessie Shulman, mezzo soprano A. Salieri: Recitative: “Or ei con Ernestina” and Aria: “Ah sia già” from La scola de’ gelosi (revised version: 1783) Julia Metzler, soprano Salieri: Scherzo instrumentale à 4 di stile fugato (ca. 1800) 2. Allegretto Mozart: Duettino: “Sull’aria” from Le nozze di Figaro K. 492 (1786) Mozart: Divertimento in B-flat major, K. `137 (1772) 2. Allegro di molto

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

One of the central principles of the early music movement, throughout its history to the present day, is that there still exist many unknown masterworks, of great beauty and artistic value, just waiting to be rediscovered. In our final Bach at Noon program BCSD offers two such pieces, in their US premieres: the Jubilate Deo of Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741), in a new edition based on the manuscript in Brussels Conservatory; and Mein Herz schwimmt im Blut by Christoph Graupner (1683-1760), which served as a closely-followed model for a better-known work based on the same text by the young J.S.Bach.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco: Jubilate Deo
J.S. Bach: Pièce D'orgue, BWV 572
Christoph Graupner: Mein Herz schwimmt im Blut GWV 1152/12b
